Werner has some real treats in store as this acclaimed ‘Science Buster’ brings his mad-cap scientific cooking experiments to the stage. He studied physics at Vienna Technical University and has been a scientific employee of the Institute for Experimental Physics at Vienna University for Neuro-physics and Physical Didactics since 1999.

We grabbed a 60 second interview to find out what makes Werner Gruber tick…

What are you up to in the world? What is your area of specialism?

I specialise in modeling the human brain. I am interested in how the brain works and how the brain can be artifically re-built with electronic circuits. As a hobby I am a specialist in the science of cooking and have written some books about cullinary science.

When did you first realise that you wanted to pursue a career in science? Who inspired you?

Since I was 6 years old, I read books about scientists and therefore I wanted to become a physicist.

What would be your dream assignment?

I work at a wonderful university, with nice colaborators. I can work in science without any restrictions. It is a dream.

What’s the best thing about being a scientist?

The new ideas, the frontier, as a scientist you have one foot over the border – always one step away from and one step toward something entirely new.

What’s the worst thing (!)?

Explosions in the laboratory and financial cuts.

What do you think is exciting in the world of science right now?

It is the first time in history, that we can look in the brain while someone is thinking. In a few years we will be able to create a synthetic intelligence on a computer and in some years more, we can build human-like robots who are intelligent.

Also, we have many unsolved problems in physics, such as problems with dark matter and dark energy. It is always challenging to think about unsolved problems.

If you were to define science, how would you complete this sentence “Science is………”

Science is the future of human kind.

To view a preview of Werner in action, watch him scramble eggs without heat !

Members of the Limehurst science club are powering ahead with their ‘Science World Challenge’. They will need to pool all of their creative, business and management skills as the big event draws closer with only nine weeks left to prepare their unique product display stand for Science World 2012.

The pupils aged 12 – 13 will stand alongside 80 world-class exhibitors at the event which will be held at Wembley Stadium on the 19 April.

Last week’s meeting saw key members of the Fisher Scientific UK Marketing Team host a hands-on workshop to guide the students in marketing their product at the event. This included logo design, copy writing, promotion and product knowledge – skills that any discerning lab-supplier will need to have in the bag!

Matthew Chamberlain, science teacher at Limehurst School and host of the science club, commented “The pupils seemed to respond really well to the practical help from the Fisher Scientific team and it’s certainly giving them a flavor of what goes on in the real world of science”.

“It’s great to see the pupils engaged and really thinking about how they can make an impact with their product at Science World this year. We’re all excited to see the results of their hard work at the big event “said Emily Quinton, marketing operations manager at Fisher Scientific.

Watch this space for regular updates on the science club’s progress and a sneak-preview of their exclusive Science World product design.

This year, 14 pupils from Limehurst School in Loughborough will use their creative and business skills to promote a scientific product alongside 80 world-class suppliers at Wembley Stadium on April 19 during Science World.

The event, hosted yearly by Loughborough-based company Fisher Scientific, showcases hundreds of scientific products along with science-themed entertainment and notable speakers. This year, the keynote speaker is Professor Brian Cox, best known for his epic BBC series “Wonders of the Universe.”

The Science World challenge is the brainchild of Emily Quinton, Marketing Promotions Manager at Fisher Scientific UK and Matthew Chamberlain, science teacher at Limehurst.

“We’re really excited by the opportunity to get involved with a massive event like Science World,” said Matthew Chamberlain. “The pupils are in their element coming up with creative ideas and ways to display and sell their product, and Fisher Scientific is able to provide valuable support to help them shine in the commercial world. We’re sure the experience gained in the project will stay with them for years to come.”

“It is a privilege to work with the pupils on this; their energy and creativity is an inspiration,” said Emily Quinton. “We hope that by working with Fisher Scientific they will see firsthand how science translates to the world of work.”

Our keynote speeches have become a popular element of the show and this year will be no exception as we welcome Professor Brian Cox. Here’s a little more about this year’s “star” attraction…

At the same time as playing keyboard with D’Ream, Brian obtained a first class degree and a PhD. He is now Professor of Particle Physics at Manchester University and one of the leaders on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva. Not content with that, he has also become a hugely popular TV presenter and author.

Brian’s television credits include the blockbusters Wonders of the Solar System and Wonders of the Universe, with a further series going into production. He has also fronted Space Hoppers, Stargazing, The Big Bang and numerous specials for Horizon. His book “Why Does E=mc²?” quickly became a bestseller.

Brian’s talks inspire audiences around the globe, from TED in America to the World Economic Forum in Davos and China. With staggering images, his presentations show that science breaks down barriers and can both shock and excite. He also describes the breathtaking work at CERN, where scientists are recreating conditions a billionth of a second after Big Bang “in the hope of revealing the underlying simplicity of the universe.”

Brian Cox is an International Fellow of the Explorers Club and winner of the prestigious British Association Lord Kelvin Award for his work promoting science. When he isn’t filming in far away places Brian writes for both tabloids and broadsheets, and co-presents Radio 4′s Infinite Monkey Cage with his friend, the comedian Robin Ince
