A study published in Nature last week shows that an engineered form of the smallpox virus could revolutionise cancer treatment.

Although using viruses to attack cancer is nothing new, researchers at the University of Ottawa have engineered a form of Smallpox that selectively replicates within cancerous tissue.

The JX-594 virus ‘selectively infects, replicates and expresses transgene products in cancer tissue after intravenous infusion in dose-related fashion,’ described the paper’s authors.

Treatment with the JX-594 virus was trialled on 23 cancer patients who had tumours in multiple organs, 8 of whom received higher doses. Of those 8 who received higher doses, 7 showed replication of the virus within cancerous tissue and no replication in healthy tissue. The virus also prevented tumour growth in six patients for a period of time. The crucial development in this trial is that the virus is administered intravenously rather than injected directly into tumours as in other viral cancer treatments. This means that the therapy may be of benefit to patients with multiple tumours.

“Intravenous delivery is crucial for cancer treatment because it allows us to target tumours throughout the body as opposed to just those that we can directly inject,” said Professor John Bell of the University of Ottawa.

While this trial was aimed at assessing the safety of administering the JX-594 virus; the patients’ responses were promising and indicate that this type of viral therapy has the potential to transform cancer treatment in the future.

The app was officially launched at the recent Science World 2011 event during which we seized the opportunity to introduce the app to customers. The feedback was very encouraging; with many of you telling us that the barcode scanner in particular, is a welcome and user-friendly resource to make life easier in the lab.

We have now received the barcode product data for Oxoid, SciLabware and Kimberly-Clark – giving you even more choice when ordering with the app.

Many of you have enquired as to when the app will be available on Android. We’re pleased to announce that talks are well underway to develop the app for use on Android, Blackberry and iPad and we will certainly update you on progress.
