Computer finds ideal drugs from billions of combinations

A new evolutionary computer programme has been created with the aim of identifying the ideal drug combination to treat critical health problems.

The multidisciplinary team from the University of Manchester developed a programme which can sift through nine billion combinations of drugs to find the ideal treatment. Described as being the first step in the development of perfect drug combinations, the system is capable of finding the treatments which can prevent inflammation occurring.

Most non-infectious diseases are worsened by inflammation and although the study, published in Nature Chemical Biology, related to stroke, the researchers believe the principle can be applied to other conditions like cancer and Alzheimer's.

Fisher Scientific Life Science Live Roadshow Coming to a Lab Near You

Fisher Scientific is hitting the road this month with its Life Science Live Roadshow.

The roadshow is a series of 9 FREE seminars, each one at a different location as follows: Dundee, Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester, Cardiff, Southampton, Oxford, Leeds and Edinburgh.


The seminars are aimed, primarily, at individuals involved in genomics and proteomics. Areas to be covered include: siRNA, qPCR and protein analysis. There is also an exhibition highlighting products from the Thermo Scientific family: Abgene, Pierce, Hyclone, Dharmacon, plus many others including Macherey-Nagel, Millipore, GE and IBA.


Seminars begin at 10.00am and are expected to finish at 3.00pm. Complementary refreshments and lunch will be provided, and all delegates will receive sample packs of key products worth up to £500!
