A new type of artificial muscle capable of lifting items 1,000 times its own weight has been created by a team of international researchers.
Created from carbon nanotubes, the muscle was described as having the same flexibility of an elephant’s trunk or octopus limbs and can be rotated 250 degrees per mm of muscle length. The new artificial muscles are 1,000 times more powerful than the currently available versions composed from shape memory alloys, conducting organic polymers or ferroelectrics.
Associate professor John Madden, from the University of British Columbia's (UBC) Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, said: "What's amazing is that these barely visible yarns composed of fibres 10,000 times thinner than a human hair can move and rapidly rotate objects two thousand times their own weight."
The nanotubes used within the artificial muscle are spun into helical yarns, allowing for right and left handed versions. The material was developed by the University of Texas, while Australia's University of Wollongong demonstrated the scale of twist the device is capable of.
