Japan Earthquake Map
On March 11th, a magnitude 8.9 earthquake struck Japan causing extensive damage, and the subsequent tsunami wreaked further devastation and destruction.
Thermo Fisher’s offices in Osaka and Fukuoka are operating as normal. Our Tokyo office was not structurally impacted, and while our Yokohama facility suffered minor damage, the building and warehouses are safe for occupation. Due to rolling blackouts in Tokyo and Yokohama, employees in those locations are operating in a mixed business model which includes working from home, working in the office during non-blackout hours and working normal business hours. Phone operations are intermittent, particularly in the Tokyo office, but email systesm are working.
While the death toll is continuing to climb and the extent of the destruction is still being assessed, Thermo Fisher is pleased to announce that we have established a matching programme for employee contributions to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The company will match 50 percent of employee contributions to this organisation, up to a total aggregate match of $50,000.
